Choosing Between U-Cut and D-Cut Carry Bags
U-Cut and D-Cut bags serve different retail needs. Here is how to choose.
What U-Cut and D-Cut Mean
Both are handle styles for carry bags, named for the shape of the handle opening cut into the top of the bag. A U-Cut handle is a single U-shaped opening cut straight into the bag panel — the simpler construction, and the standard choice for general-purpose carry bags. A D-Cut handle uses a rounded, reinforced cut-out around the grip, typically paired with a heavier gauge of film to spread the load across a wider handle area.
Sizes and Thicknesses
Both formats are manufactured in-house at Earth Bound Products' facility in Medchal — the plant lists U-cut, D-cut and W-cut punching among its custom bag format capabilities. On the carry bags size chart:
- U-Cut: 10 x 12 in (30 micron), 13 x 16 in (40 micron), 17 x 23 in (50 micron), 20 x 24 in (50 micron)
- D-Cut: 9 x 13 in (45 micron), 12 x 16 in (65 micron), 16 x 20 in (75 micron), 18 x 24 in (75 micron)
Across this range, D-Cut sizes are offered at higher micron thicknesses than the equivalent U-Cut sizes — the format sits at the heavier-duty end of the chart.
Which One to Choose
For everyday retail and takeaway use across a wide range of sizes, U-Cut covers 30 to 50 micron. For bags expected to carry heavier or bulkier items, D-Cut runs from 45 to 75 micron. Match the format and thickness to the load the bag needs to carry, not just the size.
