Compostable garbage bags are the right liner for wet waste. Since 1 April 2026, India's Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 require waste to be separated at source into four streams: wet, dry, sanitary and special care. Wet waste goes for composting or bio-methanation, so a compostable garbage bag is the natural liner for it. Measure your bins, pick the size and thickness for the load, and confirm with your waste collector that compostable liners are accepted with wet waste.

What changed with the 2026 waste rules?

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 on 27 January 2026. They replaced the 2016 rules from 1 April 2026.

  • Four streams: wet (kitchen and food waste, flowers, peels), dry (plastic, paper, metal, glass), sanitary (diapers, sanitary pads), and special care (bulbs, batteries, paint, expired medicines).
  • Bulk waste generators such as large offices, hotels, hostels and canteens have extra responsibility for how their waste is collected and processed.
  • Penalties: non-compliance can attract environmental compensation under the "polluter pays" principle.

If wet waste is going to be composted, a conventional plastic liner gets in the way. A compostable liner can go along with the waste where the facility accepts it.

Will your collector accept compostable liners?

Ask before you buy in bulk. Call your GHMC contractor, private collector or the composting unit that takes your wet waste, and ask:

  • Do you accept compostable bags with wet waste?
  • Do the bags need any particular marking?

Under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, compostable bags must be marked "compostable". Never put compostable bags in plastic recycling; they are meant for the wet stream. The US EPA composting FAQ gives the same advice.

Which compostable garbage bag size fits your bin?

Measure the opening and depth of each bin. Then allow extra length so the bag folds over the rim and can still be tied when full. A bag that is too small slips in; one that is too big is awkward to tie and carry.

Bag size (inches) Thickness Approx. load Suggested use
17×19 30 microns 1 kg desk and cabin bins
19×22 35 microns 3 kg pantry and washroom bins
22×35 40 microns 7 kg kitchen bins
28×36 / 30×38 50 microns 8–10 kg large kitchen and canteen bins
30×42 / 30×50 50 microns 12–18 kg drums and bulk collection

Sizes and loads are from our size chart and are approximate. Match the bag to the bin, and do not overfill.

How do you set up segregation that staff will follow?

  • Put wet and dry bins side by side, with clear labels and pictures.
  • Use a different bag for each stream so housekeeping can tell them apart at a glance.
  • Keep glass, foil and plastic out of the wet bin. A compostable bag does not make mixed waste compostable.
  • Check one week of bins before a big order. If the collector rejects a load, check for mixing first.

How should you trial the bags?

Run a short trial in your busiest kitchen or pantry. Note how often bags are changed, whether they tear at wet or sharp loads, and whether the collector accepts them. Use those notes to set your monthly order.

Frequently asked questions

What are the four waste streams under the 2026 rules?

Wet, dry, sanitary and special care. Wet waste is composted or processed by bio-methanation.

Can I put compostable bags with wet waste?

Yes, where your collector or composting facility accepts them. Ask once and keep their answer on record.

Can a compostable bag hold mixed waste?

It can hold it, but mixed waste is not compostable. Separate the waste first.

What size garbage bag do I need for a kitchen bin?

Measure the opening and depth of the bin. As a guide, a 22×35 bag suits most kitchen bins; larger drums need 28×36 or bigger.

Can garbage bags be printed?

Yes. You can print "Wet waste only" or your company name to help staff keep the streams apart.
