Medical waste bags must fit India's Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 first, and your budget second. Buy bags in the colour category your waste needs, sized to your bins, non-chlorinated, and with room for the biohazard symbol and bar-code label. Then confirm the bags with your Common Bio-medical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) before a bulk order.

Which rules apply to medical waste bags in India?

The Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (amended since), notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, set how hospitals, clinics, labs and nursing homes separate, store and hand over medical waste. The Central Pollution Control Board publishes the rules and guidance on its bio-medical waste page.

Three points matter when you buy bags:

  • Colour categories. The rules group waste into colour-coded categories, each with its own treatment route. Your bag colour must match the category.
  • No chlorinated plastic bags. The rules called for chlorinated plastic bags to be phased out.
  • Labels. Bags and containers carry the biohazard symbol and a bar-code label, as per CPCB guidelines.

Your State Pollution Control Board and CBWTF can tell you any local requirement on top of these.

Why choose compostable medical waste bags?

Hospitals use a large number of bags every day. Our medical waste bags belong to our range of 100% Certified Compostable Products, which is DRDO Approved. They are accepted for use in the bio-medical waste handling chain.

For any new bag, ask your CBWTF to confirm it once, in writing, for your categories. This is good practice whichever supplier you use.

How do you choose the right size?

Measure each bin: note the opening width, the depth and how much bag must fold over the rim.

  • An undersized bag slips into the bin during use.
  • An oversized bag is hard to tie and carry.
  • Do not fill above three-quarters. Leave enough to tie the neck.

Our compostable bio-hazard and garbage bags run from 17×19 to 35×45 inches in 30–50 microns (sizes are approximate; see our size chart). Share your bin sizes and we will match them.

What should procurement put in the specification?

Item Example
Colour category as per your segregation chart
Bin size (opening × depth) measured, in inches or cm
Bag size and thickness agreed after a trial
Printing hospital name, department, biohazard symbol, space for bar-code label
Monthly quantity per ward from housekeeping records
Delivery points one store or several blocks

Keep procurement, infection control and housekeeping on the same sheet. When one team changes a bin, the bag order changes too.

Choosing medical waste bags: match the colour category, fit the bag to the bin, and keep the biohazard symbol and bar-code label space clear

How should you trial the bags?

Run a one- or two-week trial on one ward and one OPD. Watch for:

  • fit on the actual bin
  • ease of tying and lifting
  • tearing at sharp corners (sharps never go in bags; they go in puncture-proof containers)
  • whether the CBWTF collector accepts the filled bags without remarks

Write down what you approve: colour, size, thickness and artwork. Every block or branch can then reorder the same bag.

Can medical waste bags be printed?

Yes. We can print your hospital name, logo, department or handling text. Keep the biohazard symbol clear and leave a clean space for the bar-code label. Check the print with the bag colour before you approve it. Our custom printing checklist explains proofs step by step.

Where can hospitals buy compostable medical waste bags?

We make compostable medical waste bags at our own plant in Medchal, Hyderabad. The range is DRDO Approved, Backed by DRDO technology and Made in India. Hospitals that need conventional film can order our poly medical waste bags as a separate range.

Hospital kitchens and canteens also need bags for food waste. See compostable garbage bags for wet waste. For bulk ordering, see our Hyderabad buying guide.
